Presented to Liberal Demcrats for Peace in the Middle East
Summary
Presented 7 September 2026. Posted 15 October 2026
Liberal Democrats for Peace in the Middle East ("LDfPME") is a members group within the Liberal Democrats political party, and I serve as its Chair. The group was formed by the initiative of our President Leon Duveen.
I have long detested Hamas, and wrote about them as far back as 2014, on my page "My perspective on Hamas and Gaza."
When Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023, I was so horrified that initially I could find nothing to say. However I didn't want my silence to be misunderstood, so issued a tweet referencing the above article. Since mid-October 2023 it has been my pinned tweet and is reproduced below.
In 2014 I explained why Hamas needed to either revise its goals or dissolve itself. It has done nothing for the Palestinians of Gaza. The murders of Israeli civilians today add to its crimes and will only harm Gazans. https://t.co/PNZzUv7h3e

On 7 September 2026, speaking in a personal capacity, I gave some members of our group a 16-minute presentation on the history of Hamas, and why I find the organisation so harmful for Israeli / Palestinian peace. You can watch it below.
I am happy to share the original PowerPoint slides.
The presentation mentions a number of sources and other material which I recommend reading and watching.
The full text of the original Hamas charter or covenant of 1988.
I mention the presentation I gave at a religious freedom symposium in Utah in 2017 "Do Muslim religious texts cause religious persecution?"
It is often said that the 1988 charter has been superseded by Hamas's 2017 "Document of General Principles and Policies." That is not correct, as you will see if you read the 2017 document.
In December 2025 Hamas released a document "Our Narrative… Al-Aqsa Flood: Two Years of Steadfastness and the Will for Liberation" seeking to justify what they did on 7 October 2023, and flatly denying that they killed any innocent civilians.
After the presentation there was a discussion between me and the participants in the audience. To watch that discussion please visit the LDfPME page "Presentation – Mohammed Amin’s perspective on Hamas" which hosts it, alongside my above presentation.
