If you read any books on work management they all tell you to manage your time properly. They tell you when you are working to turn down tasks if you don’t have the time to do them properly. Indeed one of my own success tips on this website is "Learn to say 'No'"
This advice is good advice, but it misses something very important.
When you get asked to do something that you haven’t done before, or which is outside your comfort zone, it’s an incredible opportunity. My life has been enriched endlessly, both at PricewaterhouseCoopers and outside, by accepting opportunities and invitations. To list just three examples:
Whenever you have the opportunity to do something new, if at all humanly possible, try to say "Yes."
I already had this as a personal philosophy before one of my mentees told me about a film that I didn’t know about.
The film is called “Yes man” and it stars Jim Carrey. It’s extremely funny, but it also has a very strong message. If you haven’t seen it I strongly recommend watching it.
