As a result of my petition to protect religious slaughter, I appeared in a long programme about the issue on the satellite channel Iqra TV, Sky Channel 819, on 19 February 2015.

The programme was transmitted in three parts and is now available on YouTube so I have embedded it below. The programme is partly in Urdu but mostly in English. Otherwise I would not have been able to take part!

The presenter was Imam Qasim Rashid Ahmad, the founder of Iqra TV. There were different panels in each part. I appear in Parts 1 and 3.

Part 1

The panel comprised:

• Dr Shuja Shafi - Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain
• Shaykh Abdul Qayum - Imam of the East London Mosque
• Mohammed Saleem - Spokesperson, Association of Non Stun Abattoirs
• me - appearing as Co-Chair of the Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester

I was there as the creator of the petition which by then had received a very significant amount of support from British Muslims, as well as British Jews and others. Over 53,000 signatures at 19:15 on the date of the programme.

I explained that the issue mattered very much to both Muslims and Jews. As far as the politics was concerned, I emphasised how supportive the Prime Minister was on this issue. However the British Veterinary Association keep lobbying for abolition of non-stun slaughter. I also told viewers how they could find the petition on the internet.

I will not attempt to summarise the comments of the other panel members, but you can watch them below.

Part 2

The panel changed for Part 2, and I was not in it. Instead the panel comprised:

• Shaykh Abdul Qayum - Imam of the East London Mosque
• Dr Shuja Shafi - Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain
• Adeel Syed - representing the National Halal Food Group
• Abu Eesa Asif Khan - Consultant for Halal Industry (Non-Stunned Only)

Part 3

For Part 3 I rejoined the panel, which comprised:

• Adeel Syed - representing the National Halal Food Group
• Mohammed Saleem - Spokesperson, Association of Non Stun Abattoirs
• me - appearing as Co-Chair of the Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester
• Shaykh Yunus Dudhwala - Halal Monitoring Committee

I explained that the petition had the full support of the Jewish community; it was not just a personal effort by me. In my concluding remarks, I emphasised that we live in a free country and have the right to lobby and have freedom of speech which we should exercise. I stressed there was no risk of a negative consequences for anyone from signing this petition.
